Horiba India, IIT Delhi Partner on EV, Green Hydrogen and Smart Fabric Research
Three IIT Delhi projects get CSR support from Horiba India to drive sustainable tech and innovation in key sectors.
Horiba India, a subsidiary of Japan-based Horiba Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to support three cutting-edge technical development projects as part of its corporate social responsibility program, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
The partnership will fund research into a reduced rare-earth magnet-based electric vehicle motor, 3D printing of smart fabrics and design prototypes, and the development of a solid oxide electrolysis cell for green hydrogen generation.
Focus on Sustainable Innovation
The collaboration aims to advance indigenous, sustainable technologies in India’s energy and mobility sectors.
The EV project will focus on designing a low-cost, high-torque motor using fewer rare-earth elements—a critical challenge in electric mobility.
Another project will explore 3D printing techniques for smart textiles and novel design innovations.
The third project targets the development of an intermediate-temperature proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis cell, a key technology for green hydrogen production.
“These three projects are not only a push towards supporting modern technologies but also enable us to contribute strongly towards scientific skill development and the availability of modern equipment for the budding generation,” said Horiba India President in a statement.
Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration
The MoU was signed by Prof. Preeti Ranjan Panda, dean of Corporate Relations at IIT Delhi, and Dr. Gautam in the presence of leading IIT faculty associated with the projects.
Prof. Suddhasatwa Basu from the Department of Chemical Engineering will lead the green hydrogen initiative, while Dr. Sagar Sarkar and Prof. Saptarshi Basak will spearhead the EV motor project and 3D printing project, respectively.
“This CSR initiative under the theme Together We Grow will enable youth to contribute to the development of indigenous technologies required for India’s progress,” said Dr. Gautam.
Continued Support for Technical Education
Horiba India has previously funded technical equipment at IIT Delhi to enhance education and skill development, particularly for students with disabilities. The new partnership marks a significant expansion in the scope of engagement between the two institutions.
“Horiba India’s continued support has significantly impacted the learning journey of our students,” said Prof. Panda. “These new research projects in key innovation areas are expected to yield better outcomes and pave the way for an even stronger partnership focused on empowering the next generation of India.”
Horiba India operates across three business verticals — energy and environment, bio and healthcare, and materials and semiconductor — and has positioned itself as a contributor to India’s technological advancement through education and research-driven initiatives.
