Google Selects 15 AI Startups to Tackle Global Environmental Challenges
The program offers mentorship, technical support and access to Google’s AI, cloud and mapping technologies.
Google has announced the 15 early-stage companies selected for the inaugural cohort of its “Google for Startups Accelerator: AI for Nature” program, a 10-week initiative designed to support startups using artificial intelligence to protect and restore the natural world.
The chosen startups, based across North and Latin America, are leveraging AI and other advanced technologies to address pressing environmental issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, ecosystem degradation, and carbon transparency.
The program offers mentorship, technical support, and access to Google’s AI, cloud and mapping technologies.
“We’re facing an environmental tipping point, and technology must play a central role in reversing nature loss,” said Paco Solsona, head of accelerator & startup ecosystem for SpLATAM at Google. “This accelerator is part of our commitment to equipping innovators with the tools they need to scale solutions that protect the planet.”
Startups Target Forests, Carbon, Oceans and Extreme Weather
Among the selected startups is Abundance from Brazil, which uses AI and blockchain to digitize and verify forest and carbon assets, enhancing transparency in environmental markets.
Bloom Alert from Chile employs satellite technology to optimize water production in industries like mining. Brightband from the US provides AI-based weather forecasting tools aimed at mitigating the $162 billion annual economic impact of extreme weather.
Others include Ceres Seeding from Brazil, which deploys autonomous drones for ecological restoration, and US-based Earthshot Labs which is focused on scaling global carbon markets through nature-based projects.
OnDeck from Canada uses AI to analyze marine video footage, while eDNA Explorer, based in the US, combines environmental DNA and geospatial data for conservation planning.
The accelerator comes amid growing concerns about the economic risks of environmental degradation. According to the World Economic Forum, the decline of natural ecosystems threatens over 50 percent of global GDP.
Google has previously introduced tools like Earth Engine, SpeciesNet, and the bioacoustics platform Perch to support conservation work. This new accelerator marks an expansion of its efforts to enable third-party solutions for planetary health.
Other startups in the cohort include Ecotrace Solutions, Renoster, Savimbo, SenseNet, Terradot, Toroto, Umgrauemeio and Xatoms, whose innovations range from wildfire detection systems to AI-driven materials discovery for water purification.
Following the program, participants will join Google’s global alumni network and continue to receive long-term support.
