The UK’s Liverpool Football Club has launched a world-first commemorative football shirt in partnership with US-based carbon removal firm 1PointFive to mark the 20th anniversary of the team’s iconic Champions League victory in Istanbul.

The limited-edition jersey, unveiled on Tuesday, is designed to honor the club’s historic 2005 comeback win over AC Milan while aligning with its broader environmental ambitions.

Each shirt’s carbon footprint will be addressed through Direct Air Capture technology, which removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to offset the emissions generated during production.

“This shirt marks a world-first in football – and there’s no better occasion to do it than the 20th anniversary of that iconic night in Istanbul,” said Lee Dwerryhouse, Liverpool’s senior vice-president of merchandising. “It celebrates the past while supporting our sustainability goals.”

The black jersey features gold embroidery reading “European Champions, Istanbul 2005,” alongside five gold stars under the Liver bird emblem. It was modelled by former defender Sami Hyypia, a key figure in the 2004–05 squad.

Liverpool’s Climate Strategy

The initiative forms part of Liverpool’s wider climate strategy under “The Red Way,” the club’s sustainability programme.

The partnership with 1PointFive, announced in March, aligns Liverpool with major corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon and Airbus that have also committed to purchasing carbon dioxide removal credits.

“We’re excited to collaborate with LFC, a team that continues to show their leadership on and off the field,” said Michael Avery, president and general manager of 1PointFive. “Our work together is a model for how organizations can use carbon removal technology to develop sustainable merchandise.”

The 2005 final in Istanbul saw Liverpool recover from a 3-0 half-time deficit to draw level with AC Milan before eventually winning on penalties. The match is widely considered one of the greatest in European football history.
