Adani Group Launches India’s 1st Hydrogen-Powered Truck for Mining Logistics
Adani Group launches India’s first hydrogen truck in Chhattisgarh, aiming to decarbonize mining logistics operations.
Adani Enterprises, the flagship entity of the Adani Group, on Saturday launched India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for commercial mining logistics, marking a key step in the conglomerate’s push toward decarbonizing industrial transportation.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai flagged off the hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck in Raipur. According to an official statement from the company, the truck will transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to the state-run power plant.
Transitioning to Cleaner Transport
Developed in collaboration with both Indian and international energy technology firms and a major automobile manufacturer, the truck is equipped with three hydrogen tanks and smart systems that allow it to carry up to 40 tonnes of cargo over a range of 200 kilometers.
Adani’s natural resources division becomes the first in India to deploy hydrogen-powered trucks in mining logistics. The initiative is part of a broader plan to replace conventional diesel trucks with zero-emission alternatives powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
“The initiative for hydrogen-powered trucks is a significant step towards Adani Group’s commitment to decarbonization and responsible mining,” said Dr. Vinay Prakash, CEO of natural resources and director at Adani Enterprises. “We are creating model mines with minimal environmental impact.”
Strategic Sustainability Push
Adani Enterprises was selected as the mine developer and operator for the Gare Pelma III coal block through a competitive bidding process conducted by the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited.
Hydrogen fuel, considered among the cleanest energy sources, produces only water vapor and warm air upon combustion. Hydrogen-powered trucks offer performance comparable to diesel-powered ones in terms of load capacity and range, while significantly reducing noise and harmful emissions.
“Chhattisgarh is not only at the forefront in meeting the country’s electricity demands but also leads by example in adopting sustainable practices,” said Chief Minister Sai at the flag-off event.
Integrated Green Ecosystem
Adani Natural Resources and Adani New Industries Ltd., both subsidiaries of Adani Enterprises, are jointly executing the hydrogen-powered truck initiative.
While ANR will operate the trucks, ANIL will supply the hydrogen fuel cells. ANIL is also involved in producing green hydrogen, solar modules, wind turbines, and batteries.
Mining relies heavily on diesel-powered machinery, but Adani’s push toward cleaner fuels is expected to reduce carbon emissions, minimize noise pollution, and lessen India’s dependency on crude oil imports.
Adani Natural Resources has also pioneered semi-autonomous dozer push technology in Asia, aiming to improve safety and sustainability in mining operations.
