Levi Strauss Launches Program to Boost Renewable Energy Use in India
Levi Strauss & Co. launches LEAP with Schneider Electric to help Indian suppliers adopt renewable energy and cut emissions.
Levi Strauss & Co. has launched a program in India to accelerate renewable energy adoption across its supply chain, aiming to cut emissions and improve supplier resiliency.
The LS&Co. Energy Accelerator Program, or LEAP, developed in collaboration with Schneider Electric, will help textile and apparel suppliers in India access renewable electricity.
The initiative supports Levi’s target to reduce supply chain emissions by 42 percent by 2030 from a 2022 baseline. The long-term goal is net zero by 2050.
LEAP will provide suppliers with training, financial analysis and Schneider Electric’s advisory services. It will also offer favorable pricing and return-on-investment models to make renewable electricity procurement more accessible.
Supplier Transition to Renewables
In its first stage, LEAP will assist Levi’s Indian suppliers in adopting renewable power sources. Suppliers can choose from on-site solar, renewable energy certificates, or join a multi-buyer group to enter into a power purchase agreement.
“Our path to reducing supply chain emissions is through proven, scalable solutions that meet the needs of each supplier,” said Jeffrey Hogue, Levi Strauss’ chief sustainability officer, in a statement. “By combining Schneider’s expertise with India’s robust renewable energy market, we can support suppliers while delivering on our own goals.”
India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy endorsed the effort. Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said that the initiative shows that companies can benefit from clearer and more accessible renewable energy opportunities.
Building on Past Experience
Schneider Electric has guided companies in procuring more than 1.3 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity. Levi Strauss previously participated in a multi-buyer PPA cohort under Walmart’s Gigaton program in the United States, a model likely to be replicated under LEAP.
“At Schneider Electric, we believe accelerating renewable energy adoption across supply chains is essential for climate action,” said Steve Wilhite, president of Schneider Electric’s sustainability business. “This partnership with Levi Strauss demonstrates how proven solutions can scale globally.”
Deepak Sharma, Schneider Electric’s zone president for Greater India, said the program aligns with India’s broader goals for a greener economy.
“Global brands like Levi Strauss embracing renewable energy help accelerate decarbonization, foster industrial innovation, and build a sustainable future,” he said.
Levi Strauss plans to expand LEAP to other business partners and geographies once the India program is established.
