TotalEnergies Partners With CarbonVault for Denmark’s Bifrost Carbon Capture
TotalEnergies partners with Schwenk’s CarbonVault in Denmark’s Bifrost carbon capture project to advance industrial decarbonization.
TotalEnergies announced on Thurday it has welcomed German cement producer Schwenk’s Danish affiliate CarbonVault as a partner and future customer in the Bifrost carbon capture project.
Through a farm-down agreement, TotalEnergies E&P Denmark will retain a 45 percent stake in Bifrost and remain its operator.
CarbonVault will hold 35 percent, while Danish state-owned Nordsøfonden will own the remaining 20 percent.
The Bifrost venture includes two offshore carbon capture and storage licenses about 200 kilometers west of Denmark’s coast. It forms a key part of TotalEnergies’ expanding North Sea CCS portfolio.
Industrial Decarbonization in Focus
Schwenk, one of Europe’s major cement producers, has committed to decarbonizing its operations across the continent. It has chosen Bifrost as its preferred solution to store future emissions.
The collaboration links Schwenk’s industrial decarbonization strategy with TotalEnergies’ expertise in carbon capture project development and deployment.
“This partnership shows how we can help our industrial customers cut emissions while advancing Denmark’s climate ambitions,” said Arnaud Le Foll, senior vice president for new business – carbon neutrality at TotalEnergies. “We look forward to working with CarbonVault to make Bifrost a cornerstone of Europe’s CO₂ storage network.”
Supporting Denmark’s Climate Goals
Denmark aims to become a leader in cross-border carbon dioxide storage, using its North Sea reservoirs to permanently store emissions from domestic and European industries. Bifrost is one of several projects advancing that goal.
Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, the company said.
The French energy company continues to grow its carbon capture and storage operations globally. Alongside Bifrost in Denmark, TotalEnergies is developing projects such as Northern Lights in Norway, Aramis in the Netherlands, NEP in the United Kingdom, and Bayou Bend in the United States.
TotalEnergies said it prioritizes avoiding and reducing emissions before turning to carbon storage solutions. Leveraging its strengths in gas processing, large-scale project management, and geoscience, the company aims to help European industries transition toward carbon neutrality.
