Global Nut and Dried Fruit Sector Adopts New Sustainability Certification
The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council introduces a new certification to strengthen sustainability across the global value chain.
Spain-based International Nut and Dried Fruit Council launched a sustainability certification tailored specifically for the global nut and dried fruit industry during its NUTS 2025 research event in Reus, Spain, marking a first for the sector.
Industry Milestone Toward Tailored Sustainability
The certification aims to recognize and strengthen sustainable practices across the nut and dried fruit value chain.
According to the INC, it is the first program designed “by the industry, for the industry,” addressing its distinctive challenges and opportunities.
INC Executive Director Goretti Guasch said sustainability remains a strategic priority for the sector.
“While many existing certifications include sustainability components, none have been tailored to address the unique characteristics and challenges of this industry,” Guasch said.
Framework for Responsible Growth
The INC Sustainability Certification provides companies with a framework to align with best practices and verified standards across environmental, social and governance dimensions.
It also helps firms prioritize actions and showcase their sustainability achievements in a competitive marketplace.
Committee members at the launch emphasized the certification’s role in supporting the entire supply chain, from growers to processors and exporters.
They noted that many nut growers, often family-run operations, already follow methods that protect soil, water, air and biodiversity.
Extending Sustainability From Farm to Consumer
The new certification reinforces these efforts by adding governance standards that promote fair treatment of workers and suppliers.
It also supports both small and large companies with practical guidance on reducing carbon footprints, adopting Zero Waste initiatives, and managing agricultural inputs responsibly.
Rising demand for sustainable products, especially in large markets like China, is accelerating the need for verified sustainability credentials, the INC said.
Global Push for Responsible Production
INC Chairman Ashok Krishen said the certification reflects the organization’s commitment to responsible growth.
“In today’s world, sustainability is not a ‘nice to have’ — it is the right thing to do,” Krishen said. “We are proud to pioneer and advance sustainable practices, ensuring our industry continues to grow responsibly and sustainably into the future.”
