Bahrain Launches World’s Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant in Clean Energy Push
Bahrain accelerates clean industrial growth with a record-breaking solar energy project, setting a new global benchmark.
Bahrain’s Foulath Holding has partnered with Yellow Door Energy to develop a record-breaking 123-megawatt-peak solar energy project, marking a new milestone in industrial sustainability and setting a global benchmark for rooftop solar installations.
The announcement came during the Gateway Gulf investment forum in Manama, hosted by the Bahrain Economic Development Board. The event brought together investors, policymakers and executives from across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Gulf.
Under a power purchase agreement, the project will include the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar energy power plant with a 50-MWp capacity. About 77,000 panels will be installed across a 262,000-square-meter stockyard shed.
National Commitment to Sustainability
Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Bahrain’s minister of sustainable development and EDB chief executive, said the initiative reinforces Bahrain’s position as a clean energy leader.
“Today, the island nation of Bahrain stands at the forefront of sustainable global innovation,” Alkhulaif said. “This milestone not only strengthens our position as a regional leader in clean energy but embodies our dedication to a resilient, sustainable future aligned with Bahrain’s national vision.”
Foulath Holding Chairman Meshary Al-Judaimi said the company has invested about $250 million in sustainability projects over the past few years.
“These investments show our commitment to responsible operations, environmental stewardship and the well-being of our communities,” Al-Judaimi said. “The solar energy project continues that commitment, ensuring industrial development aligns with environmental care.”
Sherif ElKholy, managing director and head of Middle East and Africa at Actis and chairman of Yellow Door Energy, said the partnership reflects how clean energy can accelerate industrial transformation.
“This project proves how cost-competitive clean energy can drive forward industry and set a global benchmark for decarbonizing steel production,” ElKholy said. “We’re proud to see this transformative project come to life.”
Scaling Up Clean Power in Industry
The 123-MWp complex will feature ten rooftop photovoltaic plants and four ground-mounted installations, making it one of the world’s largest industrial-scale solar projects.
Spread across 707,000 square meters, the site will use nearly 190,000 high-efficiency panels to generate about 200 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy in its first year. That output will cut carbon emissions by an estimated 90,000 metric tons annually.
The initiative aligns with Foulath Holding’s sustainability goals and supports Bahrain’s target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060.
Industry observers say the project highlights how Gulf nations are accelerating clean energy adoption in heavy industries. As Bahrain advances toward its net-zero targets, the Foulath-Yellow Door partnership could serve as a model for low-carbon industrial transformation across the region.
