Carbon Clean, a U.K.-headquartered company specializing in carbon capture technology, opened its new Global Innovation Centre in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to scale up carbon capture solutions for hard-to-abate industries.

Spanning 77,000 square feet, the GIC will be one of the largest dedicated carbon capture research facilities globally.

It houses two carbon capture plants and advanced laboratories for the development and testing of solvents. The center will initially host over 100 specialists, with the capacity to scale up to 350 employees.

“The GIC will be a game-changer in scaling our technology and accelerating the development of next-generation carbon capture solutions,” said Aniruddha Sharma, chair and CEO of Carbon Clean. “This investment reflects our global commitment to tackling industrial decarbonization at scale.”

Supporting Global Growth and UK-India Clean Tech Ties

The GIC will support Carbon Clean’s flagship modular capture system, CycloneCC, which the company says offers a compact, cost-effective solution for industries such as cement, steel, and energy from waste.

The inauguration was attended by Ajita Hathlia, deputy director for trade and U.K. exports in South Asia, alongside key investors, industry leaders, and company board members. The event highlighted the strengthening of UK-India collaboration in clean technology.

“The UK Government’s sustained support has been instrumental in Carbon Clean’s journey,” said Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s trade commissioner to South Asia. “This center represents another step forward in bilateral cooperation for clean growth.”

Pilot Projects and National Ambitions

Carbon Clean is already engaged in pilot partnerships in India with companies such as BHP, JSW, NTPC and Tata Steel.

The company anticipates increased momentum in the country’s carbon capture, utilization and storage ambitions, with a national CCUS mission expected to be announced soon.

With more than 2.8 million operational hours logged across its technology platforms, Carbon Clean has developed 50 reference projects globally and holds over 110 active patents.

Founded in India and based in the UK, Carbon Clean has received over £5 million in UK government grants since 2012. It also counts Chevron and Cemex among its global strategic partners and is an investor in Swedish e-fuel startup Liquid Wind.
