Verra, S&P Global Join Forces on Next-Generation Carbon Registry
Verra and S&P Global team up to launch a next-generation registry to boost transparency in carbon markets.
Verra, the world’s largest greenhouse gas standards body, has partnered with S&P Global Commodity Insights to develop a next-generation registry designed to strengthen transparency and integration in carbon markets, the two groups said Thursday.
The collaboration combines Verra’s climate expertise with S&P Global’s market infrastructure capabilities, aiming to scale up digital connectivity and improve the integrity of carbon trading.
Registry Seen as Market Backbone
Verra Chief Executive Mandy Rambharos said the effort marks a strategic shift for the organization, which manages the world’s largest registry of carbon credits.
“Registries are the backbone of the carbon market, tracking the issuance, transfer and retirement of all credits,” Rambharos said. “Our partnership with S&P Global Commodity Insights ensures we’re building an agile, smarter and better-connected infrastructure.”
Technology and Integration
The new registry will be powered by S&P Global’s Environmental Registry software, which assigns unique identifiers to credits, centralizes verification documents and allows users to track carbon, water and biodiversity credits throughout their life cycles.
Leanne Todd, head of energy transition, sustainability and services at S&P Global Commodity Insights, said the move would help unify fragmented systems and bolster trust. “Integration of Verra into the Environmental Registry and Meta Registry will underpin these platforms as the foundation for a transparent community that can foster greater trust and growth in carbon markets,” she said.
Phased Rollout
The registry will launch in two phases, starting within six months and expanding in 2026. Key features will include integration with Verra’s Project Hub for more efficient project registration, transaction-ready APIs to enable automated credit transfers, and customizable reporting tools to give buyers better insight into project-level data.
Verra said the system will also lay the groundwork for future market innovations, including compliance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and aviation’s CORSIA program.
Registry users will receive dedicated training and support ahead of the transition. Verra said more details on access procedures and system upgrades will be released in September.
