New York-based nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund has launched a free e-learning course to help professionals integrate climate strategies into corporate decision-making, marking a major step toward expanding access to practical net-zero tools and training.

The new course, Corporate Climate Action Essentials, is offered through EDF’s Net Zero Action Accelerator and Climate Corps programs.

For the first time, participants who complete the online modules will receive a certificate from EDF, validating their ability to drive credible climate action within organizations.

EDF said the course combines two decades of hands-on experience from its Climate Corps program into an accessible digital format.

Since 2008, Climate Corps has embedded thousands of fellows into companies and public institutions worldwide to help meet emissions goals, improve energy efficiency and implement renewable energy solutions.

Building Net-Zero Skills Across Industries

Through five interactive modules, participants will learn how to measure greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and 3, set and implement science-based targets and align strategies with global frameworks and regulations.

The program also guides learners in identifying key stakeholders and developing actionable roadmaps toward net-zero operations.

“Integrating climate strategy into business isn’t just good for the planet—it creates value and reduces risk,” said Ellen Shenette, director of EDF’s Net Zero Action Accelerator. “This series distills the essentials every professional needs to take the first step in building a climate strategy.”

Bridging Gaps in Corporate Climate Action

EDF leaders said the new training responds to growing demand from companies seeking to upskill their workforce in sustainability. Many organizations struggle to translate climate commitments into measurable progress.

“We’ve seen firsthand where companies get stuck,” said Sophie Marx, director of EDF’s Climate Corps U.S. Program. “This course bridges those gaps with practical tools and frameworks that our fellows have used successfully in organizations around the globe.”

Open Access to Climate Learning

The e-learning program is open to all professionals, including those in procurement, finance and operations. It is also designed for companies aiming to train employees or support suppliers developing their own climate strategies.

EDF said the course can be accessed through the Net Zero Action Accelerator webpage. The platform provides over 25 net-zero pathways, 75 customizable actions and a range of webinars and training materials.

Empowering Climate Leaders

By open-sourcing parts of the Climate Corps curriculum, EDF aims to democratize access to climate expertise and accelerate business transformation.

The organization believes that equipping professionals with net-zero skills is vital for scaling global decarbonization efforts.

“Our goal is to make credible climate action achievable for everyone, not just experts,” Shenette added.

The Corporate Climate Action Essentials course is now available for enrollment on EDF’s Net Zero Action Accelerator website.
