Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Ohmium Partner on Green Hydrogen Solutions in India
Toyota teams up with Ohmium to advance scalable green hydrogen technologies for clean transportation in India.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S.-based Ohmium International to explore the development of green hydrogen-based energy solutions in India, the companies said in a joint statement on Tuesday.
The collaboration aims to integrate Toyota’s proton exchange membrane fuel cell modules with Ohmium’s modular electrolyzers to build scalable, efficient and cost-effective hydrogen technologies for the Indian market.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi at an event attended by Union Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, along with other senior government officials and company executives.
Fueling Clean Energy Transition
Under the partnership, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation Japan and the Kirloskar Group, will contribute its expertise in fuel cell systems.
Ohmium, which manufactures PEM electrolyzers in India, will provide its modular, factory-tested systems that promise faster and more cost-efficient deployment.
“At Toyota, our vision for a sustainable future is grounded in innovation and meaningful collaboration,” said Sudeep Dalvi, chief communication officer at Toyota Kirloskar Motor. “This joint initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing green hydrogen technology in India.”
The companies did not disclose the financial terms or project timeline but said the collaboration will support India’s energy security and environmental goals.
Government Backs Hydrogen Push
The Indian government has emphasized hydrogen as a key pillar in its renewable energy strategy. Alongside Gadkari, the event was attended by Shripad Yesso Naik, minister of state for new and renewable energy, and Manjinder Singh Sirsa, minister of environment, industries, food & supplies for Delhi.
Manasi Tata Kirloskar, vice chairperson of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and Swapnesh R. Maru, deputy managing director, also expressed their commitment to promoting hydrogen-powered transportation in India.
Expanding Hydrogen Applications
Ohmium CEO Arne Ballantine said the collaboration with Toyota represents a major step in the company’s mission to commercialize green hydrogen.
“Toyota is known worldwide for their leadership in hydrogen technology,” Ballantine said. “We are excited to work together to make hydrogen-powered machines practical in the near and immediate term.”
Ohmium has a green hydrogen project pipeline exceeding 2 gigawatts across three continents, with applications spanning refineries, steel, transportation and chemical manufacturing.
The companies said the partnership highlights their shared commitment to supporting India’s transition to a hydrogen-based economy.
