Gentari, AWS Sign 80MW Wind Power Deal to Support Net Zero Goals
Kuala Lumpur-based Gentari to supply AWS with 80MW of wind power from India to advance regional clean energy goals.
Malaysian clean energy firm Gentari has signed a power purchase agreement with Amazon Web Services to supply 80 megawatts of wind power from a project in Tamil Nadu, India, as part of efforts to accelerate decarbonization and expand renewable capacity in Asia.
The deal follows a 2023 collaboration agreement between the companies and marks their first concrete project together.
Scheduled to start operations in mid-2027, the Karur wind project is expected to generate about 300,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity a year, Gentari said on Tuesday.
The output will support AWS’s target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 while advancing Gentari’s clean energy portfolio, which spans renewable power, hydrogen and green mobility.
Gentari Chief Executive Sushil Purohit said the partnership aimed to deliver “practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions” that address energy needs in key markets.
“As the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, AWS continues to work towards our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040,” said Jeff Johnson, AWS’s managing director for ASEAN. “Our collaboration with Gentari brings us a step closer.”
The agreement was formalized in a document exchange ceremony attended by senior executives from Gentari, AWS and parent company Petroliam Nasional Berhad.
Gentari, a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, has been expanding its regional footprint in renewable projects, aiming to secure long-term agreements that accelerate the shift to low-carbon energy across Asia.
