India achieved a record low price for green ammonia in its first-ever auction under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, marking a sharp drop from previous levels and boosting the country’s push toward clean energy.

The Solar Energy Corp. of India on Wednesday said the winning bid came in at ₹55.75 ($0.67) per kilogram, or about $641 per metric ton, compared with ₹100.28 ($1.21) per kilogram discovered in a 2024 H2Global auction.

First of 13 Planned Auctions

The auction, held under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Scheme, covers the supply of 75,000 metric tons per year to Paradeep Phosphates Ltd in Odisha.

It is the first of 13 auctions planned over the next month, with a combined procurement capacity of 724,000 tons per year.

SECI acted as an intermediary procurer under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, with support from the Department of Fertilizers and industry offtakers.

Price Advantage Over Grey Ammonia

With grey ammonia trading at $515 per ton as of March, the fixed 10-year price gives buyers a strong economic incentive to shift to green ammonia, SECI said.

Officials said the price discovery reflected intense competition and investor confidence in India’s policy framework for green fuels.

Push Toward Global Hub Status

The government has set an ambitious goal to make India a global hub for green hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia. A PIB press statement said the auction’s outcome would help build a secure supply chain, aided by payment guarantees designed to boost developer confidence.
