ReNew Energy Global Plc, a leading Gurgaon-based decarbonization solutions firm, said on Friday it will invest ₹22,000 crore ($2.5 billion) to develop one of India’s largest hybrid renewable energy projects in Andhra Pradesh.

The project, to be located in Anantapur district, will have a total generation capacity of 2.8 gigawatts, combining 1.8 GWp of solar and 1 GW of wind power, along with 2 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage.

ReNew said it will be among the largest renewable energy complexes situated at a single location in the country.

Foundation for the facility was laid by Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology and Energy Nara Lokesh, alongside ReNew Chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha.

In the project’s first phase, ReNew plans to install 587 megawatt-peak solar and 250 MW of wind capacity, backed by a 415 MWh battery storage system. The company said power purchase agreements have already been signed for this phase.

Power for Peak Hours, Backed by Indian Manufacturing

The hybrid project is designed to supply power for up to four peak hours daily, improving energy availability during non-renewable generating hours and aiding in peak demand management.

ReNew added that the facility will use solar panels manufactured in India and incorporate advanced solar tracking and waterless robotic cleaning systems to optimise efficiency and conserve resources.

Andhra Pradesh aims to build 78.5 GW of solar and 35 GW of wind capacity, along with 25 GWh of battery storage. Lokesh said the project reinforces the state’s clean energy ambitions and sends a strong signal to global investors.

ReNew already operates 717 MW of wind and 60 MW of solar capacity across 10 sites in Andhra Pradesh. The new development is expected to create around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs.

As of mid-February, ReNew’s global clean energy portfolio was about 17.4 GW on a gross basis. The company is expanding into digital energy services, storage, and carbon markets.
