The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Saturday approved the construction of 376,000 additional homes in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin, as part of a broader push to boost rural infrastructure and improve housing access in the northeastern state.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the fresh allocation during a virtual Grihapravesh ceremony held in Guwahati to mark the completion and handover of 55,000 PMAY-G houses to beneficiaries.

“Assam has completed 2 million homes under PMAY-G – a remarkable achievement,” Chouhan said in his address, praising the state government’s implementation of the flagship rural housing scheme.

He reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to improving living standards in marginalized and underprivileged communities.

Women Masons Hubs Launched

Chouhan also launched the Lakhimi Mistri initiative, which aims to train women in masonry skills to increase their employment prospects in rural areas.

Safety kits were distributed to five women as part of the launch. The program is expected to expand skill development and empowerment opportunities for women in construction-related work.

The minister also inaugurated 21 Knowledge Centers established under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund across Assam. According to a government statement, these centers will support farmers by providing access to agricultural information and resources.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the ceremony, thanked the federal government for its continued support. “These initiatives are key to empowering farmers, women, and rural communities through sustainable development,” he said.

Other attendees included Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and Panchayat & Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

PMAY-G, launched in 2016, aims to provide pucca or permanent houses with basic amenities to rural families living in inadequate housing or without homes.
