The United Nations Development Programme on Monday launched “Una,” an artificial intelligence-powered character billed as the world’s first AI Environment Champion, to help advance climate action and renewable energy adoption across four Pacific Island nations.

Una will serve as a digital ambassador for the Pacific Green Transformation Project, a joint initiative between UNDP and the Government of Japan, launched in 2023.

The project aims to increase access to clean energy and boost climate resilience in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.

By harnessing AI storytelling and interactive media, Una will share community-driven narratives through videos, holographic appearances, and live digital engagements.

The UNDP said the goal is to amplify local voices and inspire sustainable practices globally.

“Una signifies a groundbreaking advancement in conveying the critical need for environmental protection and nature conservation,” said Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP’s assistant secretary-general and director of the regional bureau for Asia and the Pacific.

AI Storytelling to Inspire Global Climate Action

“By harnessing AI, we can connect with diverse audiences worldwide in dynamic, interactive, and profoundly impactful ways,” she added.

Speaking via her AI interface, Una said her mission is to spotlight the experiences of Pacific Island communities and encourage the adoption of renewable energy. “Our tomorrow is shaped by the choices we make and the actions we take today,” she said.

The campaign will feature a series of documentary-style videos chronicling Una’s journey, along with live holographic appearances at international events and a dedicated website hosting real-time interactions.

UNDP described Una as an embodiment of “AI for Good” – technology designed to support human-driven efforts for social and environmental progress.
